The purpose of the ordinance is to control the excessive or improper use of fertilizer in landscapes. Excessive or improper use of fertilizer is a significant source of excess nutrient pollution to local waterbodies.
How to Comply
- Retailers cannot sell any fertilizer that contains nitrogen or phosphorous between June 1 – September 30 each year.

- Granular and spike fertilizers with nitrogen must contain at least 50% slow release nitrogen.

Approved for Retail Sale During Restricted Period
- Composts, soils & seed mixes
- Fertilizers specifically labeled for indoor use, container plants only or hydroponic use
- Macro-nutrients such as potassium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium
- Micro-nutrients such as iron, magnesium, etc.
